I have osteoporosis and my doctor says it’s no big deal?

My doctor confirmed that I have osteoporosis and I am only 13 years old. He said that it’s okay, but swim a lot, and exercise a lot.
But, the thing is that I can’t swim, and I don’t even know how I got osteoporosis? & Why did he say that it’s no big deal? Will it be worse when I grow up? Should I be worried about this? Please, I’m confused. If my doctor says it’s no big deal, should I not be worried as well?

The doctor is most likely right. You are very young to have this problem though. Did you have a bone density test for some reason? Did you fracture a bone? This is the only way to confirm how bad the density is. There are all types of tests too. The DEXA is the best one for anyone. Then he should also told you to take vitamin D and calcium too to help the bones get thicker. You can also go to a specialist for this. They are called Rheumatologists. After confirmation there is a infusion available to help prevent this and help the bones get better too. This is done once a year through an IV going into your arm at the doctors office. After you just go home until the next year. It’s like getting a flu shot every year, it only takes longer. Please ask your mom or whoever took you to the doctor for more info on this. Swimming is great exercise and fun and any instructor can teach you. Then whenever the weather is hot you can cool off in the water somewhere, or even ask your parents to get a pool if you learn to swim. This would be great exercise and allot of fun for the entire family too. Good luck and God Bless

You can reverse osteoporosis at your age. That’s why your doctor is not worried. But you have to be committed to reversing the osteoporosis. And your Doctor should have gone over this with you, and told you everything that you need to do.

Like the doctor said, you need to swim & exercise. You need to LEARN how to swim. Start taking lessons. Stay after to swim laps.
Did you doctor tell you what dietary changes to make? Did you have blood tests to test your calcium, vitamin d, etc? Are you on prescription vitamins? If the answer to any of those questions is no, then you need to find a new doctor, and get a second opinion.

    Hi there,

I agree with both the other answers, it is important to reverse this reduction in bone mass and getting Vitamin D is essential, as you are still growing and need to have strong bones. Definitely try to do some sort of activity that gets you out in the sunshine.

I know of a natural product that can greatly improve your Vitamin D intake, in the form of a cool drink for all ages. The first link below will take you to that product.

This is unrelated, but I like to share information on the dangers of antidepressants. You can order a free DVD by going to the third link below.

You can check out my blog, which has articles on many illness and what can be done to reverse or prevent them naturally. Look for the “little blue tag icon” on my blog on the fourth link below.

    Good Luck!
