How long does a femur take to heal?
My 79 year old grandmother broke her femur in two places in a car accident this morning . She has osteoporosis and they had to do surgery. How long will she take to heal? What are the chances of infection in a person here age? I am so worried about her! it has been a bad year for our family and this just made me really worried and has made me cry cause i don’t want anything more to happen to her!
Today was enough just seeing her in pain and in the hospital!
Thanks for your help!
6-8 weeks
The femur is the last bone is the body that is fully developed.
But since your gma is older, her bones are brittle. The osteoporosis will not help. I’m sorry to say that her femur may not fully heal. But the doctor will probably prescribe her on osteoporosis meds, if not already to help the body not take calcium from her bones.
Encourage her to eat lots of calcium.
It depends on the type and location of the fracture, the type of repair, her other medical conditions (e.g. Diabetes Mellitus, osteoporosis) and social habits (e.g. smoking), etc. It’s not really a straight forward question if you want the honest truth.
Do you know what type of fracture she had and what exact part of the femur was involved? Was it comminuted? Did they use bone graft material? Etc.
ey, don’t cry no mo, just have faith nuttin’s gonna happen 2 ur grand moms cuz she’s in gud hands now, & when tings get so bad there’s nuttin left 2 get but betta..
’bout her femur, u know, d lil problem we’ll have iz her age, u know when old people r involved in accidents & they r injured 2 d bone, it takes longer period of time 2 heal, but as long as d doc’s instructions r obeyed, en she doesn’t walk till her bones r *properly* healed, (emphasis on properly cuz most people usually they bones have healed when they stop feelin d pain, how wrong..) & she shuld take her drugs, then she’ll be sound as a pound…
